The below classes and services are being offered to PREF's Residents through a network of Volunteers.  If you are interested in being a volunteer, teacher, tutor or mentor at PREF, please contact Karen Butterworth at 317-839-7751 # 4416 or email her at kbutterworth@idoc.in.gov.

The mission of the Community Services Program is to provide leadership, guidance, and assistance in the development and utilization of community resources and the effective recruitment to enhance the resident's opportunities for a successful communty reintegration.  All of the programs which you see listed below are facilitated by either volunteers from the community or Interns from Indiana University - Purdue University of Indianapolis who are working on their Bachelors or Masters degrees in Social Work.

Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP):
The basic AVP Workshop is an intensive, weekend learning experience which teaches interpersonal conflict resolution skills through a series of step-by-step processes. These experiences in small groups and one-to-one interactions build a sense of community and trust through exercises focusing on: Affirmation -- Building self esteem and trust; Communication -- Improving both listening skills and assertive methods of expression; Cooperation -- Developing cooperative attitudes that avoid competitive conflicts; Creative Conflict Resolution -- Getting in touch with the inner transforming power to resolve violence. Role plays provide an opportunity to explore this power and learn new and creative ways to respond to real life conflicts in individuals' daily lives.

Schedule: This weekend seminar is held on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in school. No visits are allowed during this weekend.
Baby Care Basics:
This 8-week class is designed to give men hands on skills of parenting a child from 0-3 years of age. Topics include feeding, changing, soothing, child development, and getting CPR and First Aid certified.

Becoming Your Best You:
The objectives of this course are to promote: self-examination, self-discipline, goal setting, develop habits, ability to discern between needs and wants, and explore ones own talents.

Child Support:
Individual counseling with men concerning their current status of back child support due and ongoing amounts, and how to interact with the system in a positive manner upon release.

Celebrate Recovery:
The goal of the program is to help individuals become free from life’s hurts, habits, and hang-ups through a Christ-centered addiction program. This is achieved by learning to apply the Beatitudes’ principles and the 12-Steps. Individuals will restore and develop stronger relationships with others and God.

This is a continuing program which meets the first and third Thursday each month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in school. You may join at any time.
Commercial Drivers License:
This program is designed to prepare men for the written portion of the CDL permit test. It also prepares you for the pre-trip inspection as well as general knowledge you should know to operate within the industry.

Schedule: Meets Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Westendorf Large Group Room. The class usually runs for 6 weeks.
Conflict Resolution:
This course uses a cognitive-behavioral approach and is based on the theory of human need as a source of conflict. This class gives participants skills to effectively engage situations in order to build better relationships, transform conflicts, and avoid violence.

Changing Lives Though Literature:
The philosophy behind Changing Lives Through Literature is literature has the power to transform men's lives . A group of 10 to 12 residents meet to read, interpret, and discuss 8 short stories about struggles for manhood, individuals fighting for freedom, etc. These books will provoke discussion, offer characters for self-reflection, and explore themes that disturb and remind us that we are not alone.

Dads Coaching Clinic:
The Clinic is five-session, non-denominational weekend conference. Learn principles of being a father, husband, and individual from a spiritual point of view. The conference is centered around 16 life-changing tips that are proven to help dads develop their families into winning teams. Clinic facilitators share coaching tips and principles from sports heroes and coaching legends seen as extraordinary fathers. Videos and handouts are incorporated as teaching materials plus small breakout groups are used to enhance discussions.

The clinic takes place every 6 weeks on Friday evening (6:00 – 8:30 p.m.) and Saturday (8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) in the chapel.
Dress for Success:
This program assists residents to wear regular “street clothes” while living at PREF. Donations are made through businesses, individuals, churches, civic groups, and etc. The perception given and received makes a tremendous difference with both self esteem and the impression made to our visitors. Many residents have commented on different they feel wearing “normal clothes” as opposed to State issued.

Exploring Business Ownership:
The goal of this workshop is to have you learn principles of how to open, own and operate a business that is both profitable and efficient. 
The workshop is held on a quarterly basis. Follow up one-on-one sessions are available upon request.

Class meets on two (2) Saturdays either 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. or 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. in the school.
Employee Development Class:
The purpose of this class is to prepare yourself for re-entry by learning proper work place etiquette/skills and developing efficient social skills. It is all in the expectations (yours and others) plus what your future employer expects.

Faith Based Studies:
  1. Sunday morning Bible Study – Study based on the books of the Bible. It is facilitated by Roger Durrett. Held at 10:30 a.m. in the Westendorf Office Area.
  2. Catholic Services – Is held as a Catholic Service or Bible Study based on the participants that choose to attend.
  3. Understanding Different Faith Views – Understand what and why you believe. Held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Westendorf.
  4. Living Faith Bible Studies – The study various Christian living books that relate to every day life and its challenges. Learn to handle issues before they become big ones. Class meets Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the School Building.
  5. Stone Crossing’s Bible Studies – Much like Living Faith; studies are based on various Christian living books to handle life’s stress management. Meets Fridays at 6:30 p.m. in the Westendorf Activity Room.

Financial Awareness Training (Getting Smart About Credit):
This program provided by National City Bank executive staff teaches residents how to manage money, create a budget, how to read a credit report, etc.

Meets on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 4:45 in Westendorf Activity Room.
Gamblers Anonymous:
Addiction is Addiction. This matter is so often overlooked. Many have benefited from this program to help them through tough times including during incarceration. Gambling can be a serious issue inside and out of the fence. The facilitators have the experience and education to assist in this issue commonly pushed aside.

General Christian Worship Service (AM):
Communion Services are held the first Sunday of each month.

Health Presentation:
This class informs residents about living in the increasingly precarious environment of social diseases.

The program is mandatory during your birthday month.
Houses of Healing:
This class is based on the character based book written by Robin Casarjian. The book and class deal with the problems prisoners face. May people who are incarcerated have issues and do not realize it. This class brings those problems to the surface so they may be dealt with.  The class is facilitated by intern(s) from I.U.P.U.I.

Inside Out Dads:
A 12-session program created for incarcerated men promoting healthy, physical, emotional, and social development. A goal of this program is to assist the men in honing their parenting skills.

Jehovah Witness Studies:
A weekly study of the Jehovah Witness faith.

Job Readiness:
Human relations consultants instruct residents on how to write resumes, cover letters and practice job interviewing. 
Additionally, the “big question” of having been convicted of a felony is discussed and covered.

Meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. This is an eight (8) week program to help prepare the correct explanation concerning the void in ones work history.
Jum’mah Prayer:
The weekly prayer is set for Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the Westendorf Activity Room for the Islamic faith.

Lincoln Bank:
The bank offers residents the opportunity to open an account and receive debit cards to purchase items from the New Beginnings Deli. Residents deposit monies into their accounts from their Inmate Trust Fund. Upon release, any and all restrictions are lifted and the resident enjoys a partnership with a trusted financial institution.

Man in the Mirror:
This program discusses the twenty-four (24) problems men encounter in their lives and how to and how to deal with them.

This is an 8 week program. Meets on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m.
Mentoring Session:
The purpose of these sessions is to prepare you for your re-entry. You and concerned volunteer meet on a weekly basis for at least one hour to discuss various issues that relate to your re-entry process. These men give insight, experiences, and impart wisdom to those who want to break the cycle of recidivism.

Music Program:
This program is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced guitar, bass, keyboard, and drum players. Volunteers and Resident instructors assist those who have a desire to play musical instruments and read sheet music. This program also offers positions with facility bands and chapel choirs.

Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP):
A full weekend for residents and their spouses to learn healthy and positive communication techniques.

Purpose Driven Life:
This session is based on the book written by Rick Warren to answer the question of “Why do I exist and what is my purpose?” It is Biblically based.

Quenching the Fathers Thirst –Developing a Dad:
Trains men to become responsible fathers/father-figures that love and lead their children to success. This theory-based curriculum is useful for guiding programming interventions with factors such as understanding the role of a father, and providing training in specific skills to become the father his child needs.

Quiet Strength:
This 7 week panel of discussion focuses on the six guiding principles outlined in Coach Tony Dungy’s book “Quiet Strength.” Each week will focus on a key principle and specific passages from the Bible that support those guiding principles.

Reading With Dad and Me:
A reading program that allows Dads to read a book to their children on a quarterly basis. The book and DVD are mailed to the child to promote literacy and intimacy between Dad and child.

Resident Volunteer Program:
This program is solely based upon the resources of the residents.  The residents make themselves responsible for the tutoring of other residents.  They volunteer their time for the betterment of residents who may not be able to read, write, and do arithmetic.  They also are responsible for the preservation of Community Services.

Restorative Justice Program:
This program brings you face to face with your victim or other affected by your crime.  This program is very special in design and must be requested by your Specialist.

Screaming Eagles:
Learn to build, fly, and maintain powered and non-powered model airplanes. This is a hobby that is fun for all and a positive tool to spend quality time with family and friends upon your re-entry to society. Screaming Eagles – come fly with us. January through April are the “build airplane” months.

Substance Abuse (AA/NA) Meetings:
The most prominent common denominator of persons committed to correctional facilities is involvement with drugs and/or alcohol. AA and NA members facilitate these meetings.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is based on author Stephen R. Covey book that presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey (via the volunteer) reveals a step by step approach for living with fairness, integrity and human dignity- principles that give us the security to adapt to change, and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.

Appointments are scheduled on a need be basis.
Volunteer Chaplains:
Weekly visitation from area chaplains that “adopt-a-dorm.” Sharing and caring for a particular dorm and its needs from an outside chaplain. A short Bible Study towards the end of the visit is provided if desired by the residents.  Monthly Church groups visit dorms for an Activity Night. Interaction with the residents remind that there are folks that care how residents feel. Caring is a way to reflect how important it is to make necessary changes.
